Parklands School Entrance Installation

“All children should be allowed to live and grow…and grow…and grow…until we grow up and can decide things for ourselves.” - UN Rights of a Child

During Autumn Term 2012 I worked with 250 pupils in a Leeds primary school, designing and creating a new colourful installation in their entrance area.

Across 11 sessions with each class, I focused on different techniques offering a chance for every child to input their own piece and explore creative materials. Each child created an individual leaf, which became part of a larger collaborative tree structure.

The final piece included a mixture of leaves and branches created by every child of the school as well as text from UNICEF’s ‘For Every Child’, a simplified version of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The project culminated in a special assembly, where children read and interpreted the different rights of a child.

“We are delighted with our Tree, it makes a stunning display at the entrance to our school. Every child in school was involved with the project and it has brought the Unicef Rights of the Child to life in our school. Everyone here was delighted to work with Bryony, and through an Ofsted inspection too!.” - Headteacher
